My graduation project from the Iceland Academy of the Arts. Dekstruma Kerno is a utopian world of symbolic islands, where each and every one of them functions as a reminder of different positive values in our daily lives. The islands are made up from semiology, alchemy, magical herbs and amulets which I paired together in a way that would best suit each island's meaning.
Progresi (the green one)
A reminder on keeping an open heart and an open mind. With an open heart and open mind it's easier to look at the unexpected as an opportunity rather than a threat.
The Chaos symbol: Everything changes, there is no right or wrong way - only the way towards pleasure.
Cat's Eye shell: Breaks a jinx.
Lizard's tail: When a lizard leaves it's tail behind to get out of an uncomfortable situation it shows us how to leave the past in the past and quit being attached to what has been.
Devil's shoe string: Carried for gambling luck. Encourages us to take some risks in life.
Forteco (the red one)
A reminder on transforming negative thoughts into positive ones.
The philosopher's stone: The most sought-after goal in alchemy. Turns negative into positive.
A black cat's bone: A magic amulet that holds a variety of positive effects, such as the chance to be reborn as better persons after death.
A rabbit's foot: Lucky charm. The power is in the left foot. The more inauspicious the circumstances surrounding the origins of the foot, the better.
Angelica Root: A powerful Guardian and Healer, brings good luck in health.
Magnetismo (the blue one)
A reminder on being in good harmony and to take good care of ourselves. Both physically and spiritually.
Hexagram: Two triangles that together form the union of heaven and earth. Symbolizes a perfect harmony.
A masonic compass and a square tool: The compass forms the perfect circle. The square tool forms the perfect square. Together it can form a circle inside a square which symbolizes a perfect harmony between the spiritual and the physical.
Magnet: The sign of magnet in alchemy. Like a magnet we should emphasize on attracting good spirits and repel the negative ones.
Lodestone: Plays a role in spells to attract a lover or interesting people to one's life.
For the graduation exhibition at Reykjavik Art Museum, each island was digitally printed on bamboo silk satin.
Out of each island was born a 3d printed protective amulet.
With each flag came a small information booklet with the island's meaning and explanation of the symbols to be found inside each island.
Limited edition A1 & A3 posters are for sale. For further info please e-mail: krista@kristahall.is.
